Mu Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
The Lovelady Center, in the city of Birmingham, AL, is a mission outreach organization that started in 2004 as Brenda Lovelady Spahn began having bible study in her home with the women of The Julia Tutwiler Prison. Due to high recidivism, Ms. Spahn felt the urge to expand her mission to those women so that they would not have to return to prison. The goal of the mission is to offer a spiritual basis of living to those women who have been in the prison system and also those that suffer with substance abuse related issues. The center offers counseling, housing, rehabilitation, childcare and job readiness skills.
The brothers of the Mu Psi Lambda chapter have come to offer a strong male support of the program by volunteering their time and efforts to help load, unload and sort donated items to the Lovelady Thrift Store, which is a consignment store ran by the women of the center. Alpha Phi Alpha is proud to lend it's service and dedication to its community to bring forth a positive light on the mission of the fraternity: "Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities."
